A brown kraft butcher paper roll is unbleached 40 lb kraft, uncoated, wound on a standard core. The brown is the natural color of the fiber, not a dye. Delis, sandwich shops, bakeries and food trucks use it for wrapping, lining and printed counter paper.

What buyers usually add to the same ticket.
What a brown kraft roll is and who runs it
Brown kraft is the base sheet before bleaching. The 40 lb roll is the same weight as pink and white; the color is the fiber itself, so it never fades or rubs.
Sandwich counters wrap hoagies and subs in it and tape the seam. Delis use it for cold cuts and cheese. Bakeries wrap loaves, and food trucks tear it for burger baskets and fries.
Smokehouses use it too, for the counter rather than the pit, because kraft looks right under a pile of sliced brisket on a tray.
Jerky and sausage brands wrap retail packs in it with a tied string, because kraft looks handmade without any printing at all.
How kraft paper behaves with hot food and grease
Kraft is uncoated, so steam escapes and a hot sandwich stays crisp for the walk back to the office. Wrap a sub in plastic and the bread goes limp; wrap it in kraft and it does not.
Steam behaves differently under kraft than under a lid. The sheet takes the moisture and lets it go, so fries stay crisp for ten minutes instead of three.
Grease soaks in and darkens the spot, but on brown the mark barely registers. A fried chicken sandwich sits in a kraft wrap for twenty minutes and still looks tidy.
The sheet folds sharp. A kraft wrap holds its crease without tape better than white, which is why sandwich counters tuck and twist it instead of taping.
It tolerates smoker heat as well as pink does. Smoke stains kraft a darker brown, which some pits like and most do not notice.
Which kraft roll width suits a sandwich counter?
Width follows the biggest item you wrap. A 12 in sub needs an 18 in sheet; a whole roast chicken needs 24 in; a full table needs 36 in or 48 in.
| Roll size | Typical use | Cuts at 24 in per roll |
|---|---|---|
| 18 in x 1,000 ft | Subs, hoagies, bagels, burger baskets | About 500 |
| 24 in x 1,000 ft | Whole chickens, bread, family meal boxes | About 500 |
| 36 in x 1,000 ft | Deli counter, charcuterie boards, table lining | About 500 |
| 48 in x 1,000 ft | Wide tables, catering trays, butcher block cover | About 500 |
The 48 in roll is the one no other color offers at that width. Cut it at 48 in and it covers a square four-top; cut it at 24 in and it lines two full sheet trays side by side.
Why one color prints best on kraft
Kraft is brown, and ink on brown is ink plus brown. Black prints black. Dark green prints forest. Yellow prints a muddy tan that nobody wanted.
So print one dark color on kraft; two looks muddy, and four is wasted money. A black or deep red logo on natural brown is the look that sells the sandwich, and it is also the cheapest job to run.
Repeat the mark across the sheet every 6 to 8 in. On a roll the tear falls where it falls, and a repeat means the logo faces out from every wrap.
Line art prints better than photographs on kraft. A halftone image fills in and goes dark; a bold mark with clean edges stays crisp.
We use soy and water-based inks made for food contact, and you see a free proof on a brown background before the job runs. The custom printed butcher paper page shows kraft, white and pink side by side with the same mark.
What is the 48 in kraft roll for?
The widest roll in the catalog is kraft. At 48 in it covers a table from edge to edge with a drop, lines a whole prep bench, or wraps a full primal cut in one sheet.
Caterers roll it down a buffet, set the trays, and roll the whole thing up at the end. Butcher shops cover the block with it at close.
It does not fit a standard counter dispenser. Mount it on a floor stand or a wall rack with a blade, or tear it by hand against the carton edge.
At 24 in cuts, a 48 in x 1,000 ft roll lines about 500 sheet trays, or 1,000 half trays if you cut each sheet down the middle.
Loading a kraft roll into a dispenser
- Check the width first: 18 in and 24 in rolls fit most counter dispensers, 36 in fits a wall dispenser, 48 in needs a stand.
- Drop the roll onto the spindle so the paper feeds over the top and down toward the serrated blade.
- Pull two feet through, tear it off square and throw the first sheet away; it has the carton's dust on it.
- Tear with a downward snap, not a slow pull, and the blade leaves a clean edge every time.
Kraft or pink for the pit?
Both are uncoated 40 lb and both breathe. The choice is cosmetic. Pink hides the smoke stain and looks like a smokehouse; kraft turns a shade darker and looks like a deli.
If your brisket goes out the door wrapped and the wrap is the packaging, pink wins. If it is sliced on a kraft-lined tray at the counter, you only need kraft.
A pit that does both can buy one kraft roll for the counter and one pink roll for the wrap; the minimum is one roll of each.
Printed kraft also goes on the pit. The ink is food-safe and the heat does not move it, so a branded wrap comes out of the smoker looking the way it went in.
Mistakes to avoid with kraft roll paper
- Printing light inks. Yellow, pale blue and off-white tints vanish on brown; keep to one dark color.
- Expecting an exact match to the proof on screen. Kraft shifts the shade of every ink a little, and that shift is normal.
- Ordering 48 in for a counter dispenser. It needs a stand.
- Wrapping a wet item in one layer and leaving it an hour. Use two sheets for anything that drips.
- Storing rolls on end on a concrete floor. The bottom edge wicks damp and the first inch of the roll is lost.
How to order brown kraft butcher paper rolls
Send the width, the roll count and your logo if you want one. The exact price lands on a written quote inside one business day.
Plain kraft rolls go into production once you accept the quote. Printed rolls get a free proof with unlimited edits, then 4 to 6 business days of production after your approval.
Delivery is free and tracked to any US address, 2 to 3 business days. One roll is the minimum, so a single sandwich counter can test it before committing to a year's supply.
The brown kraft butcher paper color page lists the sheets, liners and bags that come in the same brown.
Brown Kraft Butcher Paper Rolls questions
Answered by the people who quote, proof and ship it.
Is the brown in a kraft butcher paper roll a dye?
No. It is the natural color of unbleached fiber, so it cannot fade, rub off or bleed into food.
Which kraft roll width wraps a 12 in sub?
18 in. Lay the sub diagonally, fold the near corner over, tuck the sides and roll; a sheet from an 18 in roll cut at 24 in does it.
Can I print two colors on a brown kraft roll?
You can, but one dark color prints cleaner. Kraft shifts every ink darker, and the second color rarely earns its cost.
Does the 48 in kraft roll fit a counter dispenser?
No. It needs a floor stand or wall rack with a blade. The 18 in and 24 in rolls fit standard counter dispensers.
Will a kraft butcher paper roll wrap brisket in the smoker?
Yes. It is uncoated and breathes like pink; the smoke turns it a shade darker, which is the only difference.
How many 24 in sheets come off a 36 in x 1,000 ft kraft roll?
About 500. The count comes from length, so every 1,000 ft roll gives about the same number at a given cut.
Does grease show on brown kraft roll paper?
Barely. The spot darkens slightly but reads as part of the brown, which is why delis prefer it for fried food.
Can kraft roll paper line a hot holding tray?
Yes. It takes the heat of a holding cabinet without any coating to melt and keeps the tray clean between batches.
What does the proof for a printed kraft roll look like?
Your logo laid on a brown background at real scale, with the repeat spacing marked. We edit it free until you approve.
Is kraft roll paper rougher than white or pink?
Slightly. The unbleached sheet has a little more tooth, which helps the folds hold without tape.
Can I get a brown kraft roll narrower than 18 in?
Yes, as a custom cut. Note the width on the quote; the four listed sizes are the usual picks, not the limit.
How should I store spare kraft rolls in a small kitchen?
Flat, in their cartons, off the floor and away from the dish pit. Damp wicks into the roll edge and ruins the first inch.
