What is brown kraft butcher paper?

Brown kraft butcher paper is butcher paper left unbleached, so the natural tan of the pulp is the color you see. Nothing is dyed and nothing is coated. The sheet is 40 lb basis weight, the same as our pink and white.

Kraft is the strongest of the three colors for its weight, because the fibers are not broken down by bleaching. A 40 lb kraft sheet takes a tight brisket wrap and a tape seal without tearing at the corners.

Butchers, delis and BBQ joints that want a rustic counter look buy brown. So do shops that print, because kraft is the stock a one-color logo looks best on.

How does kraft paper behave with meat and heat?

Uncoated kraft breathes. Wrap a brisket in it at the crutch and steam escapes, so the bark stays set instead of going soft the way it does under foil. The paper darkens where it touches the meat, which on brown hardly shows.

Grease is the reason most buyers pick kraft. Rendered fat, sausage drip and sauce all vanish into the tan, where on white or pink they show as a stain within the hour.

Moisture from raw meat soaks in slowly. A pound of ground beef wrapped for an hour leaves a damp patch; a chop wrapped for a short drive home does not. Kraft is not waterproof and does not claim to be.

For plain wrapping, start with brown kraft butcher paper rolls; they come as wide as 48 in, which no other roll on the site does.

What prints well on brown kraft butcher paper?

One dark ink. Black is the obvious pick, and deep brown, navy, forest green and a brick red all read cleanly. The brown stock pulls every ink a step darker, so a mid-tone comes out dark and a pale ink hardly shows.

Two colors on kraft looks muddy more often than not, and four colors on kraft is wasted money; the stock swallows the lighter inks. If a logo needs its exact Pantone colors, print it on white instead.

A repeat pattern at 3 in or 5 in spacing is the layout for kraft sheets and rolls, and a centered mark is the layout for kraft bags. Both are set up on the free proof for custom printed butcher paper on kraft.

Kraft against pink and white

All three colors are 40 lb and uncoated as standard, so the difference is color, grease, and what prints on them. Pink is the smoker's paper and reads as such to customers. White is the clean display wrap and the stock for color printing.

Kraft sits between them. It is the best grease hider, the best one-color print stock, and the only color that comes in a 48 in roll. It is the wrong pick when a customer expects to see the meat through a clean white fold.

The pink versus white versus brown guide goes through the three side by side in more detail.

When is brown kraft the wrong choice?

  • A steak display case where the customer wants a bright white fold around the cut
  • A logo in a specific pale or bright Pantone color that has to match a sign
  • A smokehouse that wants customers to recognize the pink smoking paper
  • A wet counter that needs waxed paper; kraft is uncoated only
  • A four-color design; the brown stock swallows the light inks

If none of these apply, kraft is the safe default, and it is the color we suggest most often for a first printed order.

How do I order brown kraft butcher paper?

Plain kraft needs no proof and goes to production once the quote is accepted. Printed kraft gets a free proof first. Cut sheets are from $0.30 a sheet; each roll is quoted as a roll, in writing.

  1. Choose the product and the typical size, or state a custom cut.
  2. Ask for a quote; it arrives in writing within one business day.
  3. For printed kraft, approve the free proof. Plain kraft skips this step.
  4. Production takes 4 to 6 business days, then free tracked delivery in 2 to 3 business days to any US address.
  5. Report damage or a misprint within 10 days with photos for a reprint or refund.

The quote form for kraft paper takes plain and printed orders alike.

Brown Kraft Butcher Paper questions

Is brown kraft butcher paper bleached or dyed to get its color?

Neither. The brown is the natural color of unbleached pulp. Nothing is added to the paper to make it tan.

Does brown kraft butcher paper hide grease marks on a wrapped brisket?

Yes, better than pink or white. Rendered fat darkens the paper slightly, and on brown that patch barely shows.

Can brown kraft butcher paper go in the smoker for the wrap stage?

It can. Kraft is uncoated and breathes like pink, so bark stays set at the crutch. Pink is more common only because pitmasters recognize it.

Which ink colors read on brown kraft butcher paper?

Dark ones: black, deep brown, navy, forest green and brick red. Pale and bright inks sink into the brown and lose their shade.

Is brown kraft butcher paper coated or waxed?

No. Every kraft product on the site is uncoated, with no wax and no poly. For waxed paper, choose white.

What widths do brown kraft butcher paper rolls come in?

18, 24, 36 and 48 in, each 1,000 ft long. The 48 in roll is a kraft-only width.

Does brown kraft butcher paper come as pre-cut sheets?

Yes. Pre-cut sheets, tray liners, custom printed sheets and branded BBQ wraps all come in kraft, in sizes from 8 x 10 in to 24 x 36 in.

Will a Pantone color print true on brown kraft butcher paper?

Not exactly. The brown stock pulls every ink a step darker, so pick a Pantone one shade lighter than the color you want, or print on white for an exact match.

Can brown kraft butcher paper be made into bags?

Yes. Flat and gusseted butcher paper bags come in kraft, and kraft is the better bag for sausage because grease does not show on it.

Why do delis pick brown kraft butcher paper over white?

Grease and juice stains stay invisible on brown, and a black logo on kraft looks like a deli counter should. White is picked when the customer wants to see the cut through a clean fold.
