Butcher paper table covers are wide rolls, 36 to 48 in, of uncoated 40 lb paper in white or brown. You roll a length down the table, set the food on it and roll it up after. Crawfish boils, seafood restaurants, BBQ caterers and event cooks use them instead of cloth.

What buyers usually add to the same ticket.
What a butcher paper table cover is
A table cover roll is plain butcher paper, wider than counter wrap, meant to be rolled down a table and thrown away after the meal. It replaces linen where the food is messy and the turnover is fast.
Crawfish boils are the obvious case. Forty pounds of crawfish, corn and potatoes get dumped straight on the paper; when the last tail is peeled, the whole thing rolls up with the shells inside.
Seafood houses, rib joints, oyster bars and family-style restaurants top every table with it. Caterers roll it over banquet tables for tailgates, Fourth of July cookouts and backyard weddings.
Pizza places and kids' restaurants use white covers because crayons work on them.
Game day and tailgate caterers like it because a folding table under a tent wipes down in seconds once the paper is gone.
How much paper does one table take?
Measure the table, add 12 in of drop at each end, and that is the cut. A 6 ft table takes about 8 ft of paper; a 4 ft round takes about 5 ft.
| Roll size | Table it covers | Covers per roll |
|---|---|---|
| 36 in x 300 ft | 30 in wide tables, two-tops and four-tops | About 37 at 8 ft |
| 36 in x 1,000 ft | Same width for a busy dining room | About 125 at 8 ft |
| 40 in x 300 ft | Standard 36 in dining tables with a small drop | About 37 at 8 ft |
| 48 in x 300 ft | Picnic tables, banquet tables, boil trays | About 37 at 8 ft |
A 300 ft roll at 8 ft a cut gives about 37 covers, which is a weekend for a small boil. The 1,000 ft roll gives about 125 and suits a restaurant turning tables every night.
Width matters more than people expect. A 30 in table under 36 in paper has a 3 in drop each side, which is enough to hold; the same table under 48 in paper has 9 in hanging, which guests sit on and pull.
White or brown for the table?
White reads clean and bright under restaurant lighting, shows a printed pattern in any color, and takes crayon. It also shows every drip, which at a crawfish boil is part of the show.
Brown kraft looks warmer and rustic, hides the butter and the hot sauce, and photographs well under a pile of shrimp. It only prints one dark color well.
If the paper is part of the decor, go white and print on it. If the paper is there to make cleanup fast, go brown and leave it plain.
There is a third option for boils: brown on the bottom, white on top. The kraft takes the butter, the white takes the crayons and the photos.
The white butcher paper color page covers how the bleached sheet handles ink and grease in more detail.
How does a crawfish boil run on paper?
- Roll the paper down the table before guests arrive, with a foot of drop at each end, and tape the corners underneath.
- Set out paper towels, sauce and a roll of extra paper at the end of each table.
- Dump the boil straight from the basket onto the paper in a line down the middle.
- When the table is done, fold the long edges in over the shells and roll from one end.
- Drop the roll in the trash, wipe the table, and the next cover goes down in under a minute.
Two layers are worth it for a boil. The bottom sheet stays dry and the table never gets wet.
Keep the extra roll within reach of the servers, not in the back, or the second cover never goes down.
Printing a pattern on a table cover
Table covers are printed as a repeat, never a single logo. The pattern tiles across the width and down the roll, so wherever the cut lands the table looks finished.
On white you can run two or three colors from your brand sheet and match them to Pantone. On brown, print one dark color and let the kraft carry the look.
Two colors on white is the usual order: one for the pattern, one for the name. Three gets busy. A pattern in a single soft color with the name in a darker one reads as a designed table, not a printed sheet.
Keep the repeat small, about 3 to 6 in, with your name worked in at intervals. A pattern that size reads as a tablecloth; a logo every 2 ft reads as an ad.
Send vector artwork and we set up the repeat on a free proof. You see the pattern at table scale, edit it as often as you need, and nothing prints until you approve it.
Which roll goes in a dispenser and which is torn by hand?
The 300 ft rolls are light. One server carries the roll down the row, tears against the carton edge and moves on. No stand needed.
The 36 in x 1,000 ft roll is heavy enough to want a floor stand or a wall-mounted rack with a serrated blade. Mount it near the dish pit and tear covers for the whole room at once.
Every roll uses the standard core, so whichever rack or stand you already own takes it.
The 300 ft rolls also ship lighter, which matters when a caterer loads twelve of them into a van with the chafers.
Mistakes to avoid with paper table covers
- Buying 36 in for a 36 in table. The drop is zero and the cover slides. Go to 40 in or 48 in.
- Taping the paper to a wet table. Dry it first or the tape lets go in ten minutes.
- One layer under a boil. Butter goes through to the wood.
- Printing a big logo in the middle. It lands under the crawfish tray and nobody sees it.
- Leaving a kraft cover in the sun all afternoon. It fades a shade and looks tired by dinner.
Ordering butcher paper table covers
Pick a width, pick 300 ft or 1,000 ft, say how many rolls and whether they are white or brown, plain or printed. A written quote with the exact price comes within one business day.
Plain covers skip the proof. Printed ones run 4 to 6 business days after you sign off the free proof. Delivery is free, tracked, 2 to 3 business days to any US address.
Say what the table is, how long it is and how many covers a week you expect. That lets us suggest 300 ft or 1,000 ft without guessing.
One roll is the minimum, so a single boil can order a 300 ft roll and see how it goes. Start in the Design Your Butcher Paper studio if you want to see a pattern on the sheet before you ask for a quote.
Butcher Paper Table Covers questions
Answered by the people who quote, proof and ship it.
Which table cover roll width fits a 30 in wide crawfish table?
36 in. It gives a 3 in drop each side, enough to keep the edge from sliding off and not so much that it drags.
How many covers does a 36 in x 300 ft table cover roll give?
About 37 at an 8 ft cut, which suits a 6 ft table with a foot of drop at each end.
Can kids draw on a white butcher paper table cover?
Yes. The uncoated white takes crayon and pencil and does not smear, which is why pizza places use it.
Does butter from a boil soak through a paper table cover?
Through one layer, yes, in about twenty minutes. Lay two layers and the table stays dry.
Do table covers come in pink butcher paper?
Not as a table roll. The table cover sizes are white or brown; pink stays with the smokehouse wraps.
Can I print a repeat pattern on a brown kraft table cover?
Yes, in one dark color. Multi-color patterns go on the white roll, where the inks read as printed.
Is a 1,000 ft table cover roll too heavy to tear by hand?
Yes, for most people. Put it on a floor stand or a wall rack with a blade; the 300 ft rolls tear fine by hand.
Will a paper table cover slide off a plastic banquet table?
It can. Tape the corners underneath or clip them, and buy a width with at least 4 in of drop.
Are table cover rolls waxed to resist spills?
No. They are uncoated so they lie flat, take print and take crayon. Spills are handled by doubling the layer.
Can I order one printed table cover roll as a trial?
Yes. One roll is the minimum, printed or plain. The free proof shows the pattern at table scale before it runs.
Does a 48 in table cover roll fit a standard picnic table?
Yes. A picnic table top is usually 28 to 30 in wide, so 48 in gives a generous drop on both sides and covers the bench ends.
How far ahead should a caterer order printed table covers for an event?
About three weeks. Count one business day for the quote, a few days of proof edits, 4 to 6 business days of production and 2 to 3 for delivery.
